German Factory Orders Unexpectedly Rise
Wednesday 5th April 2023 – 09:27 (BST)
Factory orders in Germany unexpectedly jumped 4.8% month-over-month during February, marking the most substantial increase since June 2021. This comes after a downwardly revised 0.5% rise in January and way above forecasts of a 0.3% gain. The report suggests that the German manufacturing industry is on track for a robust recovery in the coming months, despite the ongoing supply chain disruptions caused by the pandemic.
The surge in factory orders was primarily led by a spike in vehicle orders, which rose by 55.9%, followed by motor vehicles and engines, which increased by 3.7%, and mechanical engineering, which rose by 2.8%. Furthermore, new orders for capital goods increased by 7.3%, while orders for intermediate and consumer goods were up 1.3% and 1.9%, respectively.
In terms of order location, domestic orders rose by 5.6%, while foreign orders increased by 4.2%. Of the foreign orders, those from the Euro Area saw a significant increase of 8.9%, while orders from the rest of the world were up 1.4%. These figures suggest that Germany’s trading partners are increasingly placing orders for German-made goods, which bodes well for the country’s wider economic growth.
Excluding large-scale orders, factory orders were up 1.2%, indicating a broader-based increase in orders across the manufacturing sector. This increase in factory orders is a welcome relief for the German economy, which has been hit hard by the pandemic and has seen its manufacturing sector struggle with supply chain disruptions and a shortage of skilled labor.
Overall, the German manufacturing industry is on a steady path to recovery, with strong growth in factory orders across a range of industries. However, there are still concerns about the ongoing supply chain disruptions, which may continue to impact the sector’s performance in the near term. Nonetheless, the latest figures provide a glimmer of hope for Germany’s economic recovery and the global manufacturing industry as a whole.
