Liz Truss: New UK Prime Minister
Monday 5th September 2022 – 13:11 (BST)
Liz Truss has been announced as the new UK Prime Minister following her leadership election victory over Rishi Sunak. Securing 53% of the vote, the MP for South West Norfolk will become only the third female PM in the country’s history and at 47 years old – also the youngest of the trio.
During her acceptance speech Truss doubled-down on her campaign commitments to rule as a Conservative leader – delivering tax cuts, growing the economy, reducing energy bills and getting the National Health Service back on track following the coronavirus pandemic.
Known well for her work ethic, Truss had been serving as Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs since 2021 and also Minister for Women and Equalities since 2019.
The pound remained subdued following the news, with markets now focused on the new PM’s first speech in office and their initial cabinet appointees.
